Between January and June of this year, 417 Ghanaians attempted suicide.

According to a press release issued by the Mental Health Authority on September 10, this is the case.

“These estimates could potentially be substantially higher than we know,” the Authority said.

To mark Suicide Prevention Day, which is observed just on tenth day of September each year, the Authority shared figures as part of its mission to raise awareness and rally support for an end to a problem that knows no bounds, gender, or age.

“This regrettable behavior is not limited to a specific age group, gender, or occupation, but can be found across all socioeconomic strata and demographic characteristics. Suicide kills one person every ten minutes, and the suicide rate is far too high. To put an end to this, a concentrated effort is required

The topic for this year is "A renewed global commitment to prevent suicides: fostering hope through action."

According to the Authority, the country has been hit by these concerns, since media reports indicate that such incidents occur on a daily basis.
